It's important to provide the right environment and diet to keep your fish happy and healthy. Here are some of our top fish care tips that we hope will help you provide the best care for your fish.
1. Buy quality fish food.
Just like any other pet, a balanced diet is needed to keep your fish healthy. Fish need the right nutrients and trace elements in their diet. Here is our range of recommended fish food.
2. Be careful not to overfeed your fish.
As tempting as it is to keep dropping food into the tank, remember that quantity of food is also a key factor in fish well-being. Feed your fish a small amount two to three times a day. Also speak to an expert to check on quantities for your specific type of fish as you want to steer clear of over or underfeeding.
3. Invest in the right fish tank & set-up
This is the entire ecosystem for your fish and plays such a big role in their survival. If you set it up correctly you will be set up for success, but you need the experts to guide you. What fish are you keeping? Will they have enough space, light and what kind of pump do you need? Do you need plants? Ask a trusted fish expert about what’s best for your fish and you’ll be ready to start your journey.
4. Clean the fish tank regularly.
Every two to three weeks, clean your fish tank. Seek advice on how best to do this. Changing all the water in one go is not a good idea as fish can go into shock.
5. Tap water can be harmful to fish.
Tap water can have harmful chemicals for fish. Water is a science and there’s no such thing as ‘just add water’ when it comes to fish care. The health of your fish depends on the quality of the water in their tank so you’ll need to monitor it carefully.Products like Tetra AquaSafe make tap water safe, neutralising chlorine, chloramine, copper, zinc and lead and can be used in all freshwater and marine aquariums. With added iodine and magnesium it also promotes vitality and growth.
6. Not all fish will live happily together.
Some fish are territorial and can be aggressive to others… or have different needs to each other. If you are new to keeping fish as your pet, choose a hardy species and be patient as you keep learning.
7. Consult the fish care experts.
Keeping fish can be technical and very precise and very much based on what type of fish you have, so we highly recommend consulting an expert to ensure you understand what you need to and how, to ensure your fish is happy and healthy.
