Why do pets gain weight in winter?
There is one main culprit and it’s lack of exercise, which is where we, as pet parents, play their most important role. As it gets cold, wet and dark, we want to stay cosy indoors. Instead of popping to the beach or the park, it’s more tempting to say no to that daily walk. If our pets aren’t getting the same amount of exercising, but we’re feeding them the same amount of food, then they aren't burning the calories that they need to and they’ll put on weight. Plus, when our pets don’t move around or exercise, their digestive tract slows down significantly.
Does this apply to cats?
Yes, it does, although their lack of exercise can often be due to their dislike of going outside in the rain. If you notice your cat being less active during winter, you may need to step in and encourage your cat to play more.
Why is my pet more sleepy in winter?
It’s a vicious circle. If your pet isn’t exercising as much as he or she needs to and they aren't burning calories, then your pet may seem sleepier and lazier. It’s tempting to think this is because it’s cold and their metabolism has slowed down but it’s nearly always down to a lack of exercise and therefore a lack of calorie burn.

Ideas for indoor games with your pet:
1. Use their food to stimulate play
Rather than putting their food out each day, use their food as an opportunity to encourage play and mental stimulation. You can hide their food around the house or garden so that they have to find it (show them at first what you are doing and encourage them to search and smell it out!). Once they get the hang of it, you’ve got a great game to play each mealtime.
2. Play hide and seek
Cats and dogs love a game of hide and seek. Keep some treats with you for extra motivation! And develop the game further by making it more of a treat hunt (without you having to hide behind the curtains).
3. Make use of the toys
From feather wands for cats to puzzle toys for dogs, there are so many great toys for cats and toys for dogs that can help keep your pet active (physically and mentally).
4. Teach them new tricks
15 minutes spent teaching your cat or dog new tricks every day is worth it. It will tire them out and it’s a great way to bond with your pet.
