One of the best things about having a pet is getting to know their personality, preferences and weird and wonderful habits and quirks. Here we take a look at some of the most commonly asked questions about what cats and dogs do and what this behaviour means.
DOGS
Why do dogs wag their tails?
Most people believe that if a dog wags his or her tail it means that they are happy. Whilst this is true, there's a little more to it than that! Dogs use their tails as a way of communication. Often if they are feeling nervous or anxious their tail will be lowered. If they are calm, their tail will be still and relaxed and if they are on high alert or feel threatened, their tail will be more upright or horizontal. Wagging generally means excitement - like when you come through the door - but it can also just be a greeting or casual ‘hi’.
Why do dogs sometimes eat their own poop?
Some dogs have a bad habit of eating their own poop. Why is this? Researchers point to a number of different reasons which include:
- It could just be a habit of history. Thousands of years ago dogs scavenged for their food, often eating poo along the way.
- A pecking order of dominance. Sometimes younger, more submissive dogs in a ‘pack’ or ‘family’ eat the poop of the more dominant dog in their gang.
- Puppies are just learning. Puppies often eat poo and it can just be down to them exploring the world and, much like a baby, putting everything in their mouths.
- They’re trying to ‘tidy up’. If you’ve been cross before about a house-training incident, your pet may just be trying to hide the evidence!
- They could be sick. If your dog is eating poop it's really important to check in with your vet. It could be a sign of a sick dog (parasites/pancreas).
- They could be lacking nutrients. As above, take your dog to the vet for a check-up and make sure your pet is getting all the right nutrients from his or her diet.
What does it mean when a dog pulls a tongue?
The tongue is such an important organ. It helps your pet to taste, eat, drink and, of course with panting, it ensures the body stays nice and cool. Most dogs will pant when they are hot or during vigorous exercise but some breeds do something a little different - they keep their little tongues out all the time. This is often the case with small breeds who have ‘squashed’ faces such as pugs or bulldogs and yorkies; and is due to their genetic predisposition.
If your dog has their tongue out most of the time, make sure there is always water available (their tongues can get dried out). If it's a new habit, visit the vet to ensure its nothing more serious.
Why do dogs chew their paws?
There are lots of reasons why dogs may chew or lick their paws. It may just be that they like the feeling and they are keeping themselves clean, but any excessive licking or chewing of the paws must be addressed by a vet as it can be a sign of minor wounds (thorns and the like), or allergic reactions and yeast infections. It can also be a sign of a stressed or anxious dog.
To distract them from licking their paws, consider a fun chew toy for them to chew on instead. If it's related to stress or anxiety perhaps some calming products will help.
Why do some dogs lick so much?
Most of the time dogs lick to show how much they love and care for you, or because you just taste good! It can also be a form of communication (‘I’m so happy you are home!). If your dog licks ALL the time, however, it is worth asking your vet for their advice. Licking his paws or body can be a sign of anxiety or fleas, allergies or dermatitis.
In the case of ticks and fleas, make sure you are treating your dog regularly with an effective tick and flea treatment.
CATS
Why do cats purr and what does it mean?
Most often, cats purr when they are experiencing pleasure or contentment, like when they are on your lap and getting lots of attention. Purring is also a way for a mother to bond with her kitten. The low vibrations of the vocal cords are also believed to help with a healing process and that’s why you might hear a purr from an injured or sick cat.
How long do cats live for?
Cats have been known to live to 22 years old, with the average lifespan coming in at 15 years old. Obesity is one of the major causes for a shorter lifespan and of course regular check-ups, vaccinations and the right nutrition can help your cat live a healthier and longer life.
Why do cats sleep so much?
Cats are crepuscular which means they are most active at dawn and dusk. Cats can sleep for between 16 and even 20 hours a day and a lot of this is down to their evolution. Think of the big cats, the type you see in a game reserve and the way they hunt, chase and devour their prey before snoozing it all off. Cats need energy and they conserve this by sleeping a lot. They also sleep in short spells - on and off - so they might not be sleeping quite as much as you think.
Why do cats like boxes?
Cats love to hide and sneak a peek at the world around them. This dates back to their evolution - out in the wild, searching for prey. It is instinct for them to find confined spaces to 'hide and stalk' their prey (these days 'hide and play') or use it as a cozy, safe spot to take a nap.
If you don't have a box lying around or want something a little more comfortable for your cat to hide in, have a look at the Rogz Multi-purpose Igloo Bed.
What does catnip do to cats?
Catnip is a plant (similar to mint) which most cats love - some more so than others. Research points to catnip containing an oil called nepetalactone which releases pheromones in a cat - giving them a sense of joy and excitement. Catnip is often used in cat toys to stimulate hours of play (see all of our catnip toys here).
